The marching season

In 1795, a clash between Protestants and Catholics at the ‘Battle of the Diamond’ led to the birth of the Orange Order, whose members swore a new oath to be loyal to the Protestant King of England. Every 12 July, the Orange Order celebrates William of Orange’s victory at the Battle of the Boyne with a parade. However, by marching through Catholic neighbourhoods during the 1980s and 1990s, they often provoked violent riots. The bowler hats that are today often worn by members of the Orange Order were popular among English gentleman in the early part of the 20th century.
